Excerpt from Report of the Committee on Relics: Uniforms of Women Worn During the War It is interesting to note that one-fourth of these uniforms were presented and worn by Colonial Dames from the following states: District of Columbia, Illinois, Maine, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee. Many years ago there came to me from Miss Katharine Prescott Wormely, the distinguished translator of Balzac's writings, "With kind regards," a copy of her "Other Side of War" in which she described in her exquisite English the experiences of several months as a hospital nurse with the Army of the Potomac during the Peninsula Campaign of 1862. She tells of the work of the United States Sanitary Commission in those now long-ago days of our Civil War, and she tells with wonderful pathos of the great suffering among the wounded, and perhaps most of all, she tells of how it was and ever shall be woman's mission to be "Born to nurse, And to soothe, and to solace, To help and to heal The sick world that leans on her."
